Mochlos is a small village located on the northeast coast of Crete at the coordinates +35° 11' 1.064" North, +25° 54' 19.931" East. |

The town, with a resident population of 121 people (source Wikipedia.gr, national census of 2011), is part of the Municipality of Sitia since 2011 and can be reached via a panoramic road surrounded by olive trees. |

transparent waters (with depths ideal for snorkelling), delimited to the west by the uninhabited island of Psira (worth a visit for its Minoan ruins) and to the east by the presence of the mountain range of Kastelas characterized by its dark granite rocks jutting out to sea.
All this is enhanced by the presence of the small island of Agios Nikolaos (also deserted but rich in finds of the Minoan age) located opposite the "center" of the village to which was once connected by a strip of land now submerged. |

The only limit we can find in this stretch of coast is that it offers few sandy beach areas, unfortunately there are very few beaches and all more or less with coarse gravel, a couple are in the heart of the tiny village nearby the tavernas and the old tourist pier, then the largest, called Limenaria, is out of the village immediately behind the new port, and there is the stony beach of Loutres (about a kilometer eastbound from Mochlos) the only one that besides an equipped descent to the sea and the rental of umbrellas and sunchairs offers also a assortment of water sports and entertainment (water skiing, banana boat and jet-sky, pedalos and boat trips).
Tholos is the nearest sandy beach and is 14 kilometers (about 15 minutes by car) in the direction Kavoussi-Pahia Ammos.
Despite the lack of beaches, Mochlos attracts tourism that loves the fine Greek cuisine (proposed by the five taverns on the seafront) and the discreet cultural summer life (mostly music) that focuses mostly on the tavernas.
In Mochlos are two minimarkets, two souvenir shops and two bars (one of which is equipped with swimming pool). The nearest post office and pharmacy are in Tourlotì (about 15 minutes by car) and the petrol stations are in Messa Moulianà and in Kavoussi.
Mochlos is not connected with public bus service and is 37 kilometers from Agios Nikolaos, 35 from Sitia and about 29 from Ierapetra (source Google Maps). |
